Brokeback Mountain makes Box Office History

Mon Dec 19, 2005 at 01:32:42 PM PDT

According to IMDB, Brokeback Mountain was the #8 movie this weekend. Doesn't sound impressive? Well if you realize that it showed in only 69 theatres maybe it will seem a little more impressive.

Nationally, it averaged a sensational $34,194 per theater, which Daily Variety said was a record for any film released on more than 50 screens (except for those released in IMAX theaters, where ticket prices are substantially higher). (quote from above link).

I myself saw it Friday night in Palo Alto, CA. I am pretty sure the showing was entirely sold out, though I did manage to still get my ticket 15min before it started and I was not the last one in. And that was a 5:30 showing. When the show got out I left the theatre to see people already lined up for the next showing.

I won't give a full review. I'll just say that my impressions matched a lot mlkisler expressed in his diary. It was intense and it was slow at parts and I liked it a lot better the next day than I did right after seeing it, when my brain had had a little time to process it.

Highly recommended.

Oh, and I think this answers John Campanelli's question about whether straight guys will see it - if it's making box office records like this EVERYONE is seeing it. Ok, probably not the AFA and FotF wingnuts... but just about everyone else!
